Chee launches legal fund

Chee Siok Chin of the Singapore Democratic Party appeals for donations for her bid to declare the elections null and void, and for the defence against the recent libel lawsuit filed by the Cabinet against the Chee siblings.
The legal process, however, is very expensive. Each time I go to court to file documents, the process itself costs hundreds of dollars. It is estimated that we will spend at least $10,000 on filing fees alone.

This fight should be the fight of all Singaporeans who are concerned with transparency and democratic accountability. As such I ask you to do your part and contribute to the legal defence fund that I have set up to fight these two cases. If you feel that these are matters important enough, please give so that we can mount an effective legal campaign against the Lees and the PAP.

Chee has left her bank account details for ease of donations through bank transfer at the bottom of the SDP webpage.

I think it is rather dangerous to put your bank details available on line. Open for everyone to see. I receive about 300 requests from people offering me millions if I would just give them my bank details. The SDP should reconsider putting such information online.

Care to elaborate? In what way is it dangerous?

I agree with soci. First of all, you never know what the gov't might do. Banking privacy is hardly heard of in Singapore or at least to the extent of the Swiss, save for perhaps a few foreign banks.. bank transactions are easily traced and I wouldn't want DBS tracing them to me and passing my personal informaion to a certain govt agency who would then label me a 'sympathiser' and keep me under surveillance. Paranoia maybe.. but hey what do you expect in this country?!

i think its laudable for Siok Chin to ask fellow Singaporeans to help out in this important case. I myself would like to donate. But like previous posters here say, we want privacy & if she can work out a way for donations to be collected maybe in cash - at the SDP or designated points - that would be better. Btw, hope there is a system of checks to ensure the money really goes to the court fund & not other party/personal matters.

Just take it that you're contributing to Singapore's progress with your Progress Package. I think if I can trust the PAP to manage wisely the tax I pay to the government (ok, I have no choice), I can trust the Chees to use my Progress Package money wisely, even if they use it to support themselves (hey, these are people willng to be made bankrupt to fight for democracy in Singapore).

Yup. There are serious privacy issues here.

Also the cops have the power (all it takes is a warrant) to trace money transfers. I wouldn't put it past PapaLee to order the banks to surrender details. Use the same laws to trace money for terrorist activities. Hey why not? Chee got busted under the "Entertainment Act", and dissidents frequently get screwed by the Internal Security Act.

Many people like to support dissidents, if they believe in the cause. However, just like charity, folks like privacy and anonymity.
