"I hope that peaceful protests spring up in September 2006. The reason is that assuming September 2006 and its various protests go by without any shameful incident, will the government then become mature enough to handle peaceful non-disruptive protests in Singapore from then on? Is September 2006 the watershed in our street protest culture?"

too much wishful thinking
ReplyDeleteprotesters at such events usually come from elsewhere; they would not affect local behaviour
I have no idea which peaceful demo last year he was talking about; I only remember the white elephants, which required, like the Gomez case, a show of force without applying it

ReplyDeleteprotests will be allowed at the IMF meeting? for non-locals only?
is this some new foreign talent scheme?? foreigners do a better job protesting so they will be allowed while locals cant?

a police license is requires; I assume some of the anti-globalization organizations would apply for permit and would get it more easily than local guys; this is why police set up additiona resources; they know they will have to deal with more, and more experienced, demonstrators
ReplyDeletewahaha.... "tourists" can have the fun, locals pay the taxes!
ReplyDeletehardly fun; these people seriously believe in their causes
ReplyDeletesome of the guys will be very popular with local SPGs
