May 26, 2006
Defeated Singapore Democratic Party candidate Ms Chee Siok Chin has filed a summons in the High Court asking it to declare the results of the 2006 General Election null and void. She also wants the High Court to declare the ban on podcasting during the general election as unconstitutional.
"The banning of podcasting and blogging in GE 2006 amount to intimidation, vote-buying, and censorship which contravenes the Parliamentary Elections Act," said Chee Siok Chin.
In 2005, the Singapore Democratic Party adopted podcasting as a tool for political speech. Earlier this year, political podcasting, video podcasting and streaming video were banned in Singapore.
At the Singapore Democratic Party site, Chee Siok Chin explains why she is bring a suit against the ruling government:The PAP has been the ruling party in Singapore for more than 40 years and has won more than a dozen elections, always in landslide victories.
Singaporeans must begin to question why this is so. The PAP will have you believe that opposition candidates lack credibility and integrity. Mr Lee Kuan Yew has gone as far as calling his political opponents "scum", "liar", "cheat", "hooligans" and other derogatory names.
This is, however, not the reason why the PAP continues to dominate parliament with more than 95 percent of the seats in the House. The real reason lies in the way the elections system is designed, and the way the PAP fights the elections.
This is why I have taken out an Originating Summons to examine the way the elections were conducted and to seek a declaration from the Supreme Court that the 2006 General Elections were unconstitutionally run, and therefore, null and void.
goooo siok chin!!

SDP demo workshop
ReplyDeletehttp://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=sammyboymod&msg=106532.4
Great workshop with lots of fun and laughter, we were assigned sections on Political/Civil, Electoral, Economic and Media rights. Except other groups's discussions, I have recorded down the speeches of almost the entire workshop.
Talented speakers and people from a myriad of backgrounds were present including SDA Edmund Ng, Mr Ravi and the venerable Mr. Ghadhi. It is the first time that they had held such a workshop, which involved the participation of audiences of this nature. In short, it was an informative and memorable experience.
It is my first time hearing Dr Chee speaking in person and showing a great charisma and pace in leading the audience.
Rather then just hearing him sitting on the panel speaking in forums which is different, in this workshop, he showed his mettle of a man who can engage people and is able to walk the talk. This man clearly has substance and unlike some leaders who are overbearing, he has an incredible, civilised and soft-style leadership skills which can really motivate people.
Interestingly, Miss Chee Siok Chin whom I held with great respect, sits next to me on the right and leads the Media Rights discussion. Here are some video clips:-

"Hentam James Gomez"
This extract is from a speech by Chee Soon Juan delivered recently at a National University of Singapore Society forum. Click on the extract for the full speech:
Another Singaporean activist was asked by a former ISD officer, or former officer, to hentam (attack) Mr James Gomez. It would be “beneficial” for the activist to attack James Gomez as the government will look kindly upon the action and it would put the activist in the government's “good books".
To even think that one needs to ask the govt "permission" to podcast is ludicrous.
ReplyDeletePodcast and be damned!
"Democracy" (so-called) is a poor way to "fight". You don't need to "fight".
The internet is an anarchy—you do what the heck you want as an individual.
Now, the only way to turn that anarchy in to some sort of democracy is for as many people to just podcast.
And forget about those boring political theories folks... at least make the stuff interesting and entertaining—like the famous mee pok podcast.
Now, time to put on my thinking cap and come out with a few ideas...and when I do, it's going up on the net in in bloody mp3 format!
